Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy in their performances as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to determine if they're getting better or imploding.

Cancellieri's Surprising Return

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio during this campaign. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
